This Hui seeks to inspire and build communities capacity to engage in different forms of media, to promote diverse voices that help promote community harmony.
We will have guest speakers to share their insights, knowledge and experience as to how to utilise the power of media for positive change; amplifying the great work our community already does by promoting diverse stories and voices. In addition, we will also run a mini-workshop with resources to be shared post-hui.
Hear from special guests:
Anjum Rahman, Founder, Inclusive Aotearoa Collective – “Sharing the lived experience of a community advocate”
Jason Garman, Communications Manager, Amnesty International Aotearoa NZ – “Advocating for positive change”
Garth Nowland-Foreman, Partner, LEAD – “Communicating your cause effectively”
We are not voiceless.
Too often though the voices of diverse communities are unheard and yet diverse communities are often spoken about; not spoken with.
Elections are coming and already immigrants are being blamed for economic and social issues our country faces; a burden with no acknowledgement to the positive contribution diverse communities have made. Too often, immigrants, migrants, former refugees, ethnic communities are talked about, misrepresented, ‘othered’, demonised and used as scapegoats through media – because shocking stories sell.
It’s long overdue that our voices be heard. Our voices need to be amplified.
This hui is part of our broader work around systems change and linked to our previous media hui.
